An Absolute Delight!
Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals (Dover Books on Biology, Psychology, and Medicine)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 2001)
Average review score:

Amazingly InsightfulAlthough the century old language is a bit difficult to read initially, once you get rolling, it isn't difficult. The neatest thing is how amazingly applicable James' observations are in today's society. The book is fun and interesting to read. I learned a great deal.

The Three Sisters (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1993)
Average review score:

A fable for the modern readerCheckov was a master of composing life's largest problems into beautiful language and ordinary situations which the entire world could understand. Granted he wrote them a long time ago but the underlying situation exists everywhere today. Here are three sisters completely unable to move on with their lives. They are unhappy, they are desperate for a change of scene, they are forced to give up anyone they love to someone else but yet they remain glued to the exact place where all of this occurs. Olga has passed her prime, Masha loves someone other than her husband, and Irina has no idea what could possibly make her happy and all they do is talk about change, but never do anything active. And in the end it all comes full circle and we as an audience, a reader, need to decide how to not fall into such a life rut, to learn by their actions as we do from Aesop's fables. This play is just written a great deal better, with a little more comedy and tugging at the heartstrings.

The Thursday Friend

A Great BookThis is a great novel with a few twists and turns. The characters are all believable and you can't wait to see what happens to each one of them. This is one of Catherine Cookson's smaller books but just as interesting as all the others. It show in all ways the path to friendship and love. Try this book because it is truly like cuddling up with a friend!

Traditional African DesignsTraditional African Designs is a book that includes over 200 pieces of clip art from various countries in Africa. The pictures include representations of people, animals, designs, borders, plants and jewelery. I found this book a great resource not only for graphic design and collage projects, but also a great inspiration for jewelery design.

Traditional Doorways Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1997)
Average review score:

163 designsSunlight streaming through colored glass, or illuminated from inside in the evening is charming and inspiring. These 163 line drawings are suitable for beginning to intermediate skill levels. There are squares, rectangles, ovals, circles and half circles. Many are floral, some geometric, few are colorized, but the designs are easy to select colors for. They are suited for doorways, transoms, sidelights and window panels. Stained glass windows are a treasure to see, they draw us in when illuminated and seem to glow with the sunlight. This Dover publication is a nice addition to a stained glass book collection.

Twenty Little Four-Patch Quilts: With Full Size Templates (Dover Needlework Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1996)
Average review score:

As promised: 20 different and delightful little quiltsI enjoyed this book as it offers different ideas for one of my favorite patchwork patterns: the four patch.
The quilts are shown in color on the inside covers: 10 on the front and 10 on the back cover's inside. There is a short general section to help with the basics of quilting that I skipped and each quilt is shown with a drawing, material list and cutting instructions. Quilts can either be made with templates that are provided in the center of the book in a sturdy take out section or by rotary cutting.
The quilts are delightful and divers and I am looking forward to taking off on my own starting with the ideas in the book.

The Unknown Capablanca (Dover Books on Chess)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1994)
Average review score:

Good Capablanca literatureCapablanca is out of fashion nowadays, so this book may remain out of print. Modern chess is highly analytical and its work ethic at odds with the style of a Capablanca who reportedly did not even keep a chess set at home.
The book's main focus is on the man's supposedly less competitive games: chess tours and exhibitions, consultation games, and simultaneous play for example. Therefore, you the depth of analysis present in some prominent game collections today is inappropriate. Some less interesting games are presenting very compactly, whereas the more interesting have verbally-oriented annotations. The book is pleasing to read because it always mentions the circumstances in which the games were played, and it turns out that Capablanca was a proud man who had a need to play strongly to encourage a meeting for the world championship, which was not governed by a regulatory body at that time.
In 1919 he played a simultaneous match against members of England's parliament in Westminster. He won 36 games, drew 2 and lost none.
"During the display one member tried to put in an extra move, as is the way with politicians; but the Cuban, who had spent six years in his country's diplomatic service, was not outwitted. No international incident followed his tactful correction.
[...] For the rest he displays his infallible technique notwithstanding the need to watch thirty-seven politicians at the same time."
The printing and feel of the book is pleasing and doubtless the book is worthwhile to those interested in Capablanca.

Each of the five chapters is complete in itself. The lessons of love, friendship and acceptance are deep and satisfying. This book is almost a "The Wind in the Willows" set by the ocean; The animals are true friends to one another.
Mr. Bernard is not afraid to tackle the subject of death and loss, but the overall sense of the book is joyful and fun. Do not hesitate to get a copy of this out-of-print work--You will love every page, and so will the children in your life!
